Reflection
2 weeks ago, Ms. Guarino let us choose a small piece of monologue, so I chose the monologue that complains about her father. Her father couldn’t come to the soccer game she plays, and her father promises her to go there, but he didn’t show up. Also, she is so mad and disappointed at her dad for being this way, so the personality of my character is that she is a soccer player as we all know, and she cares a lot about her family, she wants to get love from her dad...etc. Well, we based on this, and other characters that our teammates chose such as Jenna chose a girl that is sly, tricky, ‘kind’, she wants to get everyone’s attention...etc. Also, Yongchen’s character who is a brave, doesn’t want friend to get hurt and sensitive.
From the basic personality, we have a list of choices that where we want this happen. We chose to be in the cafeteria. And then, we get to decide what is it going to be like. Through multiple conversation, we also select to based on the monologues’ story. My character, win the soccer game, but her dad din’t come. Yongchen’s character,Austin, has his friend in the prison because he keeps a gun in his locker, so Austin character reported him to the school principals. Jenna’s character, Allie, sells the magazine to the local family, she sometimes is being mean to the people around. She has some tricky ideas in her mind sometimes.
So the story goes like Nicole and Austin are sad in the cafeteria. Nicole is sad because her dad didn’t come, and Austin is sad because his friend went to the prison, so he didn’t have friend with him. The original plan was Allie came forward, and tries to comfort us and let us be friends together, but it doesn’t really work because Allie is a person with ambitious, she wants everything that could benefit her, so we changed a little. Maybe, she wants to collect all the signatures from people, so she can be the president, but since Jesse was part of the student council, and he has already gone. Allie thinks it’s better to replace it with only a president, so she could be the president. As a result, she needs people for her to sign the sheet paper. In conclude, she can be the president, so we changed that to emphasize that Allie is a ambitious person, she wants everything. So everything, from Austin writes a letter to his friend, to Nicole feels upset to her dad, she has a reason to let these all come together. After we became closer, she would come forward, and asked us to sign the paper for her. Nicole is a hesitate person, she doesn’t know which side she would choose, so she looks at both sides, and finally, she thinks Jesse is a nice guy in the school, so they shouldn’t do this thing to him.
This was a lot different than the solo work, because we as a whole should work together, and think together like what’s the best for the group like should we be louder, and should he be more angry...etc. Also, solo work don’t have to interact with each other. We can just sit or stand there, express our feelings. However, here in the group work, we should care other as well, we should communicate with other. We always provide advice to one another like how should you improve when you are mad or sad. We should also care about each other as well, I am a person always laughing on the stage, so sometimes, I should not laugh and to prevent myself from laughing or smiling to other. When I laugh or some laughs, we should do it again. In order to prevent this happen, I try not the smile on stage, and they try not to laugh at me. I think the solo in the beginning was easy to me because I can express my anger, but the hard part for me is to not laugh on stage! When I saw someone’s face, I want to laugh because it is so funny? Nevertheless, I try to cover my bad habit now. In the last two performance or so, I controlled myself not to laugh or smile at people. Also, I should be more loud when I talk to people, sometimes, I just automatically lower my voice. As a result, I couldn’t hear myself in the video. I should also be louder on stage as well, so people can hear my voice. Well, in this group work, I learned to express my feelings to the audience like how sad I am. When I complained about my father, I also displayed my annoyed and impatient to Austin. I should improve it through all the aspects from loudness, to enlarge my acting to the audience. Also, I need to hide my laughing when I am on stage. I will keep working on that. The thing I improve is now I try to ask if I should do this, try to think widely for portraying my character.
