Theatre in Pratice

Stanislaviski and the system
In the class, we watched a brief video about the process of theatre. At first, it was created by the Ancient Greek that they just tell the story about the myths they believed. As time passed, Roman Empire took over their theatre, and they used a little chorus, instead they established dialogue between characters, so then, it became so popular. However, after Roman Empire, Middle Ages appeared, people only performed religions. As Renaissance came afterward, people develop improvisation and devised theatre that most people wore masks on stage. Then, in the 1900s, Stanislavski appeared, he found out the flaws that people did and also he thought it was boring that they had stimulated emotions for the show. As a result, he created another system to the actors which let the actors live in the part.

In the book, his system is a way to let the actors create a truthful characters on the stage, and now there is still people use this kind of way to help them comprehend acting. It is also a system that help the actors to find which ways of acting will be convenient to you by going through the practice and exercise they provided. And this chapter mainly help the students to work on the main areas, then when they go to texts, it could be useful to explore the best self on the stage. He emphasized that the purpose of this was not only create the life of the human spirit, but also to have communication with one another in the artistic way. People who study must not only emphasize the experiences itself inwardly, but also portray the physical experiences. So to do that, students must learn the ways to be well trained in both voice and body gestures.
In the understanding part of imagination, students must find a place and stand in a released position, and then, imagine that your body was pulled up by the strings, so just stand up. In these exercise, students will imagine what it is like when they are standing in a dry and sandy desert. After that, students will imagine what it is like when they are standing at the edge of waterfalls. Then, students will imagine that they are standing in the field...etc. So these exercise help the student have a better imagination while they are standing. For me, I will imagine there is going to have sand in my mouth and in my eyes, and the wind is groaning in the desert. Everything was yellow, I could also see some bumpy hills in the desert. There is nobody standing there besides me, but I could also see the camels from far distance. My lips was dry, I didn’t bring any water around.
Next exercise will be imagine about what if. Ask myself, what if now it was 12 hours later, what would I do.
Then, for me I think I am just going to sleep in my bed, then, I wake up. I will see the dark and silent world around me, and see that my roommate was still sleeping. After that, I will lay down and start to let myself go to sleep.
Ask myself: in fact, I have never been to Russia before, but I had heard from my friends saying Russia was a chaotic country, but I never been there, so I have no idea about what it is going to be like.
In the Revolution of Moscow. I think every Revolution will kind of be the same because there will be a lot of people died, executed, raped. A lot of talented people will died. People will live in fear and scared.
Well, the what if kind of help me to think about what will it be like when I go there, it help me use my imagination.
The imagination can help the actor to think about the circumstances around as it is real. Also, when people imagine, we would probably use our five senses to think about the characters. Then, people will use it to build up the characteristics, background, motions etc.
In chapter 2, it talks about our imagination. The book gives us some examples and let us to create a picture while we are imagine things such as creating the pictures of the character’s life by giving details. Then, actors will follow it and use imagination to create the situation.
In chapter 3, it want us to relax our body. At first, we are the Rolex watch engineer, so we are trying to fix the watch, but then, we will lay on the floor, breath in and out, relax ourselves for 1-2 mins. As we breath in and out, we should try to relax ourselves by actually not using energy or muscles. To see if the relaxation will help us to better focus on mending the watch. Stanislaviski said free body is an important part of the system. In order to use our imagination, we should be fully relaxed. Then, it will put you into your characters on the stage. After relaxation, we could see it is easier to focus on the characters.
In chapter 4, student will learn concentration and focus skills. It will divided the students into two groups. While group A will start to observe the overall circumstances around the classroom. Group B will start to arrange the classroom furniture in a way, then, group A will use 30 seconds to remember the structure of the  room. Group B will rearrange the classroom again. Afterward, they will ask group A to come and find out what has changed in the room. Then, they will start to do the same thing with group B.
In chapter 5, students will use communication in several ways, the first way is movement, the second is voice, and the last one is invisible rays. The rays are invisible rays that flow between people. So people will do an exercise to try if they can use invisible rays to communicate. People will stand in line, the first person will think of a color, then, they will use invisible rays to tell the second person what is the color, then the second will tell the third one… After all, the last person will say what is the color that they want to say. In this exercise, students not only highly concentrated in it, but also students will need an open minding to experience.
