Yesterday, we went to Hartford Bushell to watch a play called Les Misérables. This place was alike the Broadway that me and nan went before because it was huge, and they have two sections that one is the downstair section(more expensive), and another one is the upstair section which has more people around, and people can see the overall clearly. The entire place built with fancy rounding. When we arrived, the show was going to start soon. All the people were getting quiet and exciting to wait for the show begins. When we sat down and the music came straight to us. As we all know Les Miserables is a well-known musical play all over the world. In China, our teacher even required us to see that movie before, but since I watched this movie when I was really young, I almost forget everything. However, I remember the entire musical show as we watched in Hartford. The director of Les Miséables is Brian Eads. He had conducted series of musical before.
The setting of the story is France. At that time period, innocent and poor people are suffering starvation and unequal treatment. The main character, Jean Valjean, because he stole the a loaf of bread, and attempts to escape the prison, he stayed and served in the prison for 19 years. Then, Javert releases him, but he has to be in observation. In the town, he is being push aside by everyone. As a result, he has to stay in the street alone, but the bishop of Digne sees him, and treats him nicely by giving him enough food, wine and everything he needs. He, nevertheless, steals  all the sliver goods from the house. Finally, he got caught  by the police, yet he is shocked that the bishop says all the sliver goods were the given gift to him, and save him from prison. At that time, Jean Valjean promises to himself that he could never forget the people who let him go to the jail for 19 years, and he is so thankful to the bishop. He decides to start his new life again. He tears off the parole, so he would never been mock by anyone.
Eight years later, throughout the changes he made, he had became a factory owner and the mayor of this city. One of his workers, Fantine has an illegimitimate child. The other workers( females) discover it, and call her to get out of the factory. Then, the manager sees this happen, and insults her for having illegitimate child, so she has been kicked out by the company.
She has to collect the money for the medicines for her daughter, Fantine decides to sell her precious locket, her hair and finally she sells herself as a prostitute. After all of this, she is so tired and exhausted both by mentally and physically, so she starts to have a verbal fight with an aristocracy. She is about to taken to the prison by Javert, but she begs to him not take her to the prison. And at the same time, Jean Valjean sees this, strongly reacts to take her to the hospital. When Jean Valjean goes to the hospital, he sees a man is under the carriage, so he carried all by himself and saves the man’s life. But Javert sees this and thinks that he is the Prisoner because Jean Valjean has abnormal energy to carry heavy stuff, yet the Jean Valjean was already caught by Javert. Jean Valjean couldn’t see an innocent man to go to the prison for him, so he decides to say he is the prisoner. At the hospital, Valjean promises to the dying Fantine that he is going to take care of her daughter. Javert goes to the hospital and wants to catch Valjean, but Valjean escapes from it.
Cosette, Fantine’s daughter, who lives with the Thenardiers family. They abuses Cosette while she is living with them, but they spoils their own daughter Eponine. They had a small hotel for the costumers, and they constantly steal people’s properties in the hotel. Valjean appears and sees Cosette. Additionally, he wants to take Cosette to Paris, so he pays for the Thenardiers to let her get out of that place.
In 1832, the turmoil of the city appear because the leader General Lamarque died, who is the only government that cares about the poor people in the city. The gang that was lead by Thenardiers assault Valjean and Cosette, but they were extricated by Javert. Afterward, Javert recognizes them, and he thinks he is going to put Valjean to the prison. At the scene, the student Marius falls in love with the Cosette, but Eponine falls in love with Marius as well. Marius begs Eponine to find Cosette, so Eponine reluctantly agrees. News of the death of the General continually attack people, and the students declare to have revolution.
Eponine brings Marius to the house of Cosette, and Cosette finally falls in love with him. Eponine also prevents the gang to rob the house of Valjean, saying there is only an old man and a girl live there. Valjean thinks that was Javert, so he wants to flee the country.
In Act 2, the students build the barricade. Marius doesn’t want Eponine to join the barricade, so he lets Eponine to send an letter to Cosette, but then, when she goes in, she is being discovered by Valjean, so the letter is in his hand. Eponine feels worried about Marius, so she decides to go there to rejoin the barricade.
The barricade builds, and the defy army warns them to surrender or die. Javert is exposed as a police spy. To save Marius’s life, Eponine is killed. Valjean sees the letter and determines to go and find Marius. He provides useful news to the students, so that he has the chance to kill Javert, but he gives up his chance and lets him go. The students stay a night around the barricade, Valjean prays to God that lets Marius alive from it. The next day, everyone besides Valjean and Marius is dead. People have been killed by guns, but Valjean saves Marius life by taking unconscious Marius to a peaceful place. They see Thenardiers is robbing the corpses besides the road. And they also meet Javert, Valjean begs him to let Marius go, but Javert lets both of them go. Javert is confused by the social justice and also the mercy of Valjean, so he killed himself.
Marius doesn’t know who rescue him from the danger, and he becomes better after Cosette cure. Valjean confesses the truth of his identity and wants them to go away from him.
At the wedding of Marius and Cosette, Thenardiers tries to blackmail Marius by telling him that Cosette’s father is a murderer and shows Marius the ring he stole. Marius then, realizes that is Valjean saves his life from danger, and they run to their father, and learn the history before hand. Fantine and Eponine also takes Valjean away, and says God is be with him. Valjean dies peacefully.
For me, I think the overall scene is beautiful because they use varied scenes to portray different places. There is some different background between the scene such as the scene when Valjean came back from prison and when he went to the town that everyone disgrace to him. However, some background were too dark that it’s kind of hard to see the scenes. I have to move forward in order to see what’s the background. But I especially like the water scene that Javert jumps into it, it gives me a feeling of watching movie(technology period). I also like the music that the orchestra is playing. Every notes is in the appropriate places, so their skills were impressive and I feel like they never missed any notes in the play. I think the costumes were perfect because the aristocracy and the government officials were wearing big cape and fancy France symbol(red and blue coat), but the poor people were wearing dark color cloth to show that they are poor. Rich people usually walked in proud. So it caught my attention because the poor also used not only cloth to show, but also they displayed their body language to show us how poor they are. They squeezed their heads forward to seek the mayor or other governor, and lowered their heads when they show that they are poor. The lighting is awesome that they followed every specific character when the character move from one place to another. When we don’t need to focus on this character, they won’t put light under that character, on the other hand, they will put light on the character that need to focus on, so it really help us to see which one is the important one.
The setting is dark and black which shows us the darkness of that time period, I think the director can make it brighter on the stage as it went through because sometimes, it is so dark. The character that highlighted the most is Valjean because he is the main character in the show. The story mainly portray the events that Valjean has faced, and through his ages and position, the perspectives or ideas had changed over time. At first, he swears to remember the people who let him get into the prison, but then, as he changes, he becomes really kind and he feels guilty about what he had done. The director had done that really well because it shows us the changes in Valjean. The only bad thing that I wanted to point out is sometimes, I couldn’t distinguish which one is Valjean because they all look the same, and they always moved from one to another. As a result, I think the director could focus more on the changes and gives us some symbolizations for Valjean. Valjean is always against Javert, because he tears off the parole which means he breaks the laws, and it leads Javert to finds him. The two are always escaping and finding one another. Valjean at first is not a good person, because he steals bread, breaks laws, lies to the people that he is the mayor...etc. But he also changed from a bad person to a good person that he saves many people's’ lives from danger. Javert is not a good person as well, he is always stubborn, think the justice always is the right...etc. Javert always wanted to catch Valjean because he breaks the law, but overall, he was confused by the ‘justice’. And the similar character will be Valjean and his daughter. I feel like his daughter always did the things that he told to do; she always obey the rules and things that Valjean said, even the things that she doesn’t like at all. Maybe she thanked Valjean to take her out off the horrible place, so she thinks that’s enough and she just obliges whatever he says. The two characters achieved well, and
The favorite character that I like is Eponine because her voice is so beautiful when she sings high notes. I couldn’t never forget her voice. Not only her voice attracted me, but also her personality. She loves Marius, but she doesn’t ever steal or take it from Cosette. She just devotes everything that she can give to Marius. She is nice and kind to everyone, while Marius falls in love with Cosette, she provides the information to Cosette’s house, and sees the man goes across the barrier. Also, when the gang want to rob Cosette’s house, she prevents them from breaking into the house, and screams to attract people to pay attention. She even begs her dad to get away from this house because it only lives an old man, and a girl. Moreover, when the French troop wants to shoot Marius, she pushes him away to avoid the shooting, so she even gives her life to Marius just to protect him, and when she is dying, she just wants Marius to hold her, not to kiss.
I really like this show! Because this show was sitting in a warm place, and the characters were all singing, which sang so great. If it only had words, it will be kind of boring, but people are singing along. In the following night, my mind was filled the melody and lyrics, so the songs actually brainwash my mind.  Also, the acting is so good that the main character such as Jean Valjean and Fantine and other people express their emotions through singing. I can see the images and emotions that they wanted to convey to us. I think that show was so impressive to watch.
