My understanding of the video

Ms.Guarino asks us to see the TED video of Julie Taymor. She has been working in theatre for over 20 years, so she has a lot of experiences over those years. At first, she mentions about the Lion King. That is the one I watched before with my friends in New York, and I think the show was impressive and fabulous. I still remembered the number of people that went. People just became quiet down, and there is a man standing on stage, and singing out to the people. His voice was so loud and beautiful that even now I can still feel it. But why the man is wearing an overall mask. Was he a  People were so excited to see the show. Then, when the show began, I was impressed by the props because the animals from the show were not actual animals or images that were elaborated to become animals on the screen. The truth is every person represents some kinds of animals in the wild. The creativity(thinking) beyond was enormous. Not only the thinking of each person represents an animal, but also it is hard to let individuals perform and show it to the audience. The talented artists practiced every day, just to show the audiences the beauty of the art and the props.

At her age of 22, she explained that because of the awesome experience when she went to an Indonesian island, she is able to be so successful. She had been into theatre when she was 11, but when she saw this performance by the local people for the boy's ceremony. Men were all dressed up in fine and elaborated cloth and headdresses. She was shocked that why they were incredibly well performed, so after she finished this show, she asked, people, said that’s for the God. She realized that there was no money influence, and the talented men were just performing. They built up their own tools and expression to display it to the god, and to the audiences. She then, showed it to the audiences, to perform the Lion King. She said the Lion King was an example to show the talented dancers and singers on stage.

Lion King was the most famous Broadway Show. She thought that the essence of the Lion King was the circle because when she wanted to show the drought, she had to come with a circle of silk on the floor that disappears into the holes. She loved the audiences who had imagination when they came in, and suspend their disbelief. Originally, when people saw the actor’s head with crops and grass, they knew that is grassland. That’s what she loves about when people can fill in the blanks, and move a step over to think. She thought that not only the story is important, but the people who tell the story, and the ways that the person used. That’s the connection with what she said about she loved low tech and high tech.  For the low tech, if there is no typical dancer who moves around and swings on the wire, the high tech is useless. In the Lion King, people are not only used impressive technology, but also the talented singers and dancers produce the fact of performing. She thought like although the big images are important in which represents the technology, but also the small technology is also important, just as she saw in Indonesia.

She then talked about the show the Tempest, the different method she uses when she produces movie and play. The book was written by the Shakespeares. She put it into the public for twice in the movie, and every time men were the main character. This time, she changes to a female. In the movie, she can use different techniques to control the play with different aspects(moving forward, upward, downward to show the palace), but in the play she directed, there is only one aspect that people can see, so she cannot use dimensions to play around, but she will have a person to emphasize the story in the end. For the movie and the play, she uses two different kinds of method to show the audiences. One is becoming smaller and smaller as people would see it as a sand building, another one is a girl who is playing with the sand building, and suddenly two men come forward, and destroy it.
For the high technology, she also gives the example of Spider-Man. The Spider-Man used a lot of high technology and all different types of techniques. Rock n’ roll is fully presented in the play. She then, tells us another story. When she and her friend saw two volcanic mountains, she is willing to try to live one. As she climbed up to the volcano, and she suddenly found out that she had no way to go. Then, she decided to throw away her camera, and shoes because she saw a way to escape from the mountain. Other routes were not working, but only the one, so that’s the chance when she wanted to try something new. She knows she throws the company and people on the back, but that’s the only path she had, the only way is to go on.

From the TED talk, I have learned the importance of combining the people and technology together. She says it in the first place where the people wear different masks, cloths to show the respect to the audience, to the god. But this doesn’t mean the end. It also needs to combine with the technology where can show people’s different adaptation, and thinking. In her words, everything is important, the story itself, the person who tells, and the methods it use can all influence the play.
