Reflection
Ms.Guarino let us to choose some movie or play in Julie Taymor version, and write about her own adaptation. Then, if we need to do any research for other directors, it will be much easier. Julie Taymor is an American stage and film director, playwright, and costume designer. The most famous play that she directed was the Lion King in the Broadway. For me, I choose the play of the Magic Flute. The Magic Flute originally was created by Mozart. She then changed some of it into her own version and put it in the Met. Lots of people said Julie Taymor created the best of the Magic Flute because of her combination of different cultures.
The Magic Flute is basically about Tamino and Pamina. Tamino is the main character in the play. He is the prince of a emperor. However, he gets chased by a monster, and is fainted. Three ladies see this and save him from the danger. Tamino wakes up and thinks it’s Papageno who saves him from the monster. But then, the three ladies appear and tell him it’s them who save him, and give him a portrait of the queen’s daughter,Pamina, saying she is being slaved by Sarastro. Since Tamino sees the picture, he falls in love with Pamina. The queen comes out with thunders, and commands him to save her daughter from the evil figure by giving him a gift to fight for. Tamino consents and Papageno follows him. They set on the journey of saving Pamina.
In the presentation, I have done well to describe the entire story by giving a small piece of synopsis in which people will understand the story better. Some people might not be able to see this production, so I prepare a summary which people can acknowledge the basic story, so when I talk about themes and her version, people can know what I am talking about by using some examples like because Tamino saw the portrait of Pamina, so he starts to set on the journey to Sarastro, and if other people don’t know the story. They don’t know who is Tamino, Pamina, or Sarastro. Also, I read it out loud, so people can focus on me and my story rather than staring at nowhere. I have a huge voice when I was presenting in the class because of the heater was loud, I have to be louder than that, so people can hear my voice. I also provide many pictures to let the people see what is it like in the play. For example, I prepared pictures about brotherhood when Tamino and Papageno stand in the place, and swear to be loyalty and save Pamina from danger, at that time, their relationship gets higher and Tamino starts to worry about Papageno, warning him what to do and what not to do, they then get to the same side and work together so well, so this picture can let people see Tamino and Papageno work as a whole, and can also understand which character I am describing. I then write about the Julie Taymor version. However, I couldn’t find anything about the original version vs. this one. As a result, I just write about her own version, and what I discovered from the Julie Taymor’s play and what other people had said about her version. Also, I added some her own explanations about what did she change in the book, I combined all of them together. In the blog, I provide the same themes and the her own version, but I explained it more with evidences I found online and also my understanding about the evidences such as the Queen of the Night. She has a different outfit than the three ladies. Her outfit is like a moth of white dress. Then, the dress suddenly turns into red and the white just disappeared, In my understand is she is getting more angrier and then she couldn’t hold the white and pure color anymore, so she turns into red moon which represents violent, and aggressive. I combined the fact with my own understanding and explanation, I think that’s what I did well. The thing that I could improved is I need to find more source. I didn’t find enough source to prove my point. Also, Sometimes, I didn’t understand the articles about the Magic Flute, so I skip the part. I think I shouldn’t. Maybe I should watch the part that it is talking about and try to understand it. I also should give several sentences to explain why I think that. I didn’t have any sentences, so people might get confused if they just hear some of the part. For example, in the presentation, I didn’t put any sentences in the themes part, because I think I can explain it well, but afterward, I think I should give some sentences for people to understand it. I can put Julie Taymor’s interview, so people can understand my point or I can show a brief part of what I need to explain. Because watching movies or clips can help people to focus. I have learned a lot of skills of Julie Taymor from watching and researching about the Magic Flute. I have acknowledge her version of highlighting. She have been to Asia for many years, so when she comes back. She then blended in many Asian cultures with the theatre, such as the masks she uses in the Magic Flute and the highlights she had in the play. I have learned her own style. Because of Yongchen’s presentation of putting words and sentences, I also wanted to put sentences in my presentation. I think that might going to help if I put more sentences. Moreover, I think the introduction of each of the section really helps to have an overall image in Yongchen’s presentation. I think I need to add that as well. Because we didn't have time to see Jenna’s presentation. I only write what I learned from Yongchen’s presentation, and the great thing about his presentation.
