The part that we have to revise
The weakness that I have in my presentation is I didn’t actually include some important information. For example, I didn’t say the vital skills for the actors and that’s pretty important to say. Also, I had too much facial information such as makeup, and costume that people wear on stage. However, I think because of my focusing part is voice, the unique part which is different with the western opera. China has its own tune of singing the Cantonese Opera. I didn’t include much about why I am doing this culture enough(maybe I can say the people who perform in Cantonese Opera decrease, so I want people to know more about the culture. Then, more people can inherit the depleted culture. Also, I can compare the Cantonese Opera with another theatre. I will explain the similarity between the Cantonese Opera and Noh Opera in Japan. Also, the difference will be also listed in the presentation as well. I didn’t perform about my culture as well. I think I should sing a clip about the character--fadan since that’s the character I wanted to highlight. Maybe I can combine with the dance about how the fadan dance in the Opera, what’s the gesture and movement in it. I need to edit a lot of my presentation.
At first, we went over every presentation in the theatre class, but I think we all need to revise our presentation to look better.
For my part, I am introducing the Cantonese Opera, and there is a lot of information about makeup, cloth choice and even hairstyle in traditional Cantonese Opera. So it is hard for me to pick which one is more suitable for my overall explanation. I then decided to only talk about the history of the Cantonese Opera, the roles, the brief summary of makeup, clothing, and hairstyle. I will also talk about the four skills and five methods in my introduction because that’s the basis of each character. Every single character should actually train for four skills and five methods in order to get on the stage properly. Then, I will also provide some movement that they would do in the class based on the video I found online.
For the convention, I will especially talk about the techniques that the actors use on stage. For example, I will explain the voice usage in the Opera, most of the characters use their throat and nasal to produce the unique sharp sound. Also, they have different voice categories such as zihau, pinghau, and dahau in Cantonese Opera. Then, I will focus more on zihau because she is the girl protagonist character in the Opera. She is young, beautiful and female, this character is more suitable for me because I am a girl as well. My voice is a soprano so I would like to play this character to have a try.
I already had a primary acknowledgment about the fadan and I searched in the voice lesson, so the good thing is we try to comprehend the voice of fadan in order for me to sing the part.
For Jenna’s presentation:
Maybe she can include some history of her culture such as how did this culture even get over to Japan, and where did it spread. What do people do on stage? Is it all about the positive side of Japanese story or criticize the government. What is it especially used for? What do people wear on stage...etc? Also, maybe she would have more information about the convention that she wanted to include in her presentation. The dance movement, the speaking or the usage of the fan? I don’t know what she wanted to do. Moreover, there was little information about the convention and the techniques that the actors use on stage.
The good thing she did has she introduced the vocabulary about the terms that her culture used so the audiences would know it immediately. Also, she had some slides about the section which enable the audience to understand which part she is at. She showed us some photos so we can understand it better about what she is describing. As a result, I realize that maybe that’s a great part that I can do to my presentation as well. Because it is hard to describe the makeup they utilize, so maybe I can show some pictures.
Yongchen did a great job of introducing the background information, but lack of interesting words sounding. Sometimes, I will just stray from where is he. Maybe he can change his voice so we can follow easier. Also, he needs to act his character in the presentation about how he walks, how he talks in the people because it’s kind of confusing. Also, making a vocabulary list like Jenna so we can understand the character’s name and what it represents because I just couldn’t understand the terms he is talking about. He can talk about the difference between other theatres in the lists because I knew that he didn’t talk about the variations.
