Aladdin- the play I watched
On Thursday, Ms.Guarino asked us to find some play that is related to our technical theatre. Mine was the costume and makeup. As I found a little thing online, I acknowledged that the costumes can inform the audience about the character, the social position, the personality and the contribution to the play. Moreover, it would make the actors focus more on the stage because of the costumes they are in. And I want to talk about the show I watched on Aladdin. It is a love affection story between two young people in the middle east. Aladdin, a poor and unfortunate young man, falls in love with Jasmine, the wealthy woman which lives in the castle. All the men in this play wear a typical middle east cloth with their head surround with yarn.
Aladdin wears a half open red cardigan and with a pair of white pants. The costumes he wears are kind of scruffy which symbolizes his poor life-the half open cardigan. However, the color of the shirt gives another perspective of his life. He doesn’t give up or kill by this hopelessness. The red shirt represents passion, love and acceptive to all the new things. Aladdin is a person with all his passion in his heart. When he bumps into Jasmine, he immediately falls in love with Jasmine. Afterward, in order to display his wealthiness, he changed his dress to white cloth with all the small decorations.
Moreover, when the magic genie lamp comes out of the stage. He wears a blue cloth which has all the decorations inside of him. It strongly advises that the magic lamp is wealthy based on his sparkling cloth with all the diamonds. Also, the makeup on his face states that he is extremely funny. The makeup portrays his personality, funny, active, helpful. Also, his costume is blue, indicating sea, water, and sea is so large, saying that it must be the destiny which brings the two together. Blue is also a color representing wisdom, trust, faith and loyalty. When the magic genie lamp meets Aladdin, he becomes the wisdom lamp for Aladdin. Everytime when Aladdin needs him, he will come out and save him.
Also, I watch the part when Aladdin goes into the cave. He is astonished by all the magnificent views inside: the golden walls and expensive jewelry. Moreover, when the dancers move to the stage, his eyes filled with shining light, couldn’t believe the truth that everything is golden. To demonstrate this amazing and golden cave in a more dramatic way, the dancers dress themselves as gold, representing that the cave is rich and fruitful.
