Blog about the presentation
I have learned a lot from those presentations. First of all, I would like to say the things I learned from my information. From my presentation, I acknowledge that the costume and makeup are for presenting the characters in the play. Well, it depicts deeply about the personality, social position, economic situation and the contribution of the characters to the show. Actually, when I was young in a show, I have never noticed their costumes at all. This information brings me to the important side of a show. Now, I started to focus on a character’s costume that they wear. It helps me to establish the plot of the scene, especially knowing what are they going to do next. Moreover, I now acknowledge that what the roles are for the costume director and the makeup director. They are the people who need to sit down with the director and discuss what the costume should the actors wear to show this theme. And this gets me thoughts about in a real, official show, the costume and makeup directors actually need to do a lot of controls and decide a lot of costume issues with the director to make the entire show work well. Furthermore, there are preparing plenty of things to let the audience remember the show and the actors. As a result, the costume director must know which color is suitable for this specific character. Red might be suitable for a passionate character in the play. Black might suitable for a evil and aggressive character. White could be representing the pure relationship like an angel coming from the sky. Purple and darker green can actually embellish the graceful of a lady. Yet, it can also represent the dark side of a person, similar to the black. Yet, grey and darker color could also emphasize the poorness of a character. What’s more, the texture of the costume is another important point of a character. If a character wears a roughness linen, the audience probably can notice that he/she is a poor and basic character. Sometimes, it can change based on if the main character is part of the poor or not. If a character dresses nicely and has a smoothness silk covering his/her body, we can identify that this character might be from a rich family. However, all of my sayings is based on the realistic situation. On the other hand, some directors would love to show the unrealistic side. I want to learn more about the matching costume with the color of the light. Is there any connection or relation between the color of the costume and the color of the light. As a director, I will consider more on the choice of color first because actually audiences couldn’t see that far and analyze what is the texture, but the color is a huge point, it represents the mood of the director, the social position of the character. I want to learn more about lighting on the stage that when should the director change the light and which light should he/she change? And also, I didn’t really understand how many lights there are in a play and which light is representing which emotions?
About music that Jenna talks about it today. I also learned a lot of thing through the presentation. I acknowledge that he plays in ancient time was influenced by god and they were using the storms, thunders, and rains to present the sound. Yet, the Shakespeare period changed all those, people would like to go more realistic for the atmosphere and indoor reasons. In addition, people wanted to use the sound because they want to emphasize the tone that the director wants to convey: the thunder comes to set the mood of frightened, fears and dangerous. Yet, if the director gives a chirping sound from birds, it usually emphasizes the morning, lively and happy. The wind can also portray the windy, frightened, and scary. Most of the time, the sound cues would follow the plot, after the end of a conversation or monologue. To emphasize the upcoming events, the sound director would control to see which line to come in. Moreover, the sound can also be music. The music gives the setting of a scene, similar to the mood part. It normally provides the scenery that the actors are in. As well as, the music also gives a time period to the audience. Some time period only has certain music and favor groups.
The light is a huge part of the technical theatre because, without it, we cannot even see the stage. The intensity controls how strong the light is on the stage. The color of the light is based on the wavelength frequency. In certain wavelength frequency, the stage will change from one color to another color. Another part is the direction, the director is going to choose which side to put on the light in order to create a well-situation and environment for the actors. For the color, the yellow color usually uses for a warm stage to portray a sweet scene. The white light is only for making the stage lighter or darker. Floodlights are the simplest of all theatre luminaires. This kind of light can allow the audience to see all of the stages. The fresnel lighting is unique in its design and is easily identified by the stepped concentric rings that form the surface of the lens. This is the spotlight I think in which it can follow the actors to a certain place. The light also emphasizes the situation, mood, of the characters.
Ms.Guarino is in charge of props and sets information. I knew that as well as the costume director, the set director, and prop director, they need to sit down with the director and discuss all different kinds of props they used in the play, and which theme that the director wants to convey to the audience. Moreover, if the event is happening in a house, the set director has to build a model house just to make sure it’s accurate. After the model house, the set director also builds a real one so that the play will be more realistic. Also, in order to be realistic, the design of the sets and props must fit the time period you are in. That’s an interesting point because the sets actually help to build the time period and the mood of the play. Does the play want to convey love or hate? Look at the sets and props, maybe you will find out more. I think the 3 dimensional will be interesting and exciting for us to do the next time. I am kind of expected the IB director's notebook for next year because we must explore a lot about the original plot and themes, yet we alter, and gradually, we will have our own interpretation about a certain play.
