Proposal 2
The props can be simple in which only have the living room decorations, including a daybed for Laura, a table, a chair, a telephone, the set of glass animals, dinner table for them to eat breakfast in the second scene, clothes rack, so that when Tom leaves, he can take his cloth off from the hanger.
The stage I am using will be a stage around people because I want to emphasize the house in the Glass Menagerie. The entire plot was basically focused and centered on the family conflict and the house. Every time when they discuss about their problems, the people are basically sitting in the house. Even every single argument is making in the house. Also, to have a more connection and close relations with the audiences( the audience might feel similar with Amanda, Tom or Laura), like maybe the audience will have a deeper sympathy for Amanda or for Tom if I put my stage around. It can also lead the actors put their mood into the show with a round stage. The stage can press the emotions to the actors rather than the normal broadway stage. Normally, the audiences in the normal stage couldn’t see the emotion expression, so in order for the audience to feel the same as the actors. I wanted to design my stage as a round stage.
The costumes that I have for the three main characters: Amanda will have a old-fashioned pajamas(linen, and old) because her situation of staying home all the time, emphasizing her relaxation than Tom’s. Her real job now became salesman, so most of her time is staying home. Tom is working in the warehouse, so his cloth might be a formal or special working suits. Yet, Laura’s costume might be a little pinkish and childish since she lives on her own world, thinking that the glass animals are her friends. As a result, her costume can be childish pajama. However, the other part when Laura goes out, buying some butter for the family. She dresses outside costume and to represent her personality, she can wear childish clothes as well because it stands out her perfectly. Maybe she can even bring some glass animals with her to release her stress of going out. For makeup, Amanda and Laura both have a little and normal makeup because they constantly stay at home and they don’t have much money to buy products for makeup.Since Amanda doesn’t have to stay outside, and she doesn’t hope to marry another man, so she doesn’t wear any makeup. On the other hand, Laura relies most on her glass animals than her family, so she doesn’t wear makeup as well. Yet, she can have some makeup on in the second scene because she goes out for shopping and to highlight her excitement of going out with her glass animals, she can put some makeup. Tom, however, will have more darker makeup just to emphasize his working condition in the warehouse. The tiredness in the warehouse can be highlight by his makeup and his costume.
The music sound for the first scene will be a provocation music, in which I want to emphasize Amanda’s annoyance and her unreasonable personality. She goes and finds Tom to provoke vobal fighting because she doesn’t want her son to be addicted in writing or literature. The most important thing for her son will be working in the warehouse, so once she sees her son writing at the table, she goes up and refuses him to write. It’s really different than what I was trying to do before. When we are designing it for our Lit and Performance class, we tended to think Amanda actually cares about her son, she wants to have some connection with her son, but now since I want to portray this personality, I will adjust her as the provoker in this novel, standing in Tom’s view. When the glass is breaking into pieces, the music will be more of a sad music. In the second scene, Laura wants her brother Tom to apologize to her mother, but Tom actually doesn’t want to do that. He doesn’t think it’s his fault this time, so at first he doesn’t want to do it. As a result, the music for this time will be embarrassed music. Which choice will he make, talking to his mother or not? Afterward, there will be several changes for the music. The second music I want to alter to will be the calm and relaxing music, Tom finally chose to apologize to his mother, and his mother starts to understand him in someway. Yet, afterward, they start fighting again for what should man do, taking an adventure? Or having responsibility on his shoulders? In this case, I want the music change from calm and unfasten the knot into tension music. Amanda and Tom have different opinion about certain things, and that’s the main argument between the two. The music then can change to stressful music in which to cause Tom wants to leave and go to work. However, Amanda forces him to stay and want to talk about Laura. She is eager to find a gentle caller for Laura since she doesn’t have any caller yet. And in order to support the family economy, she would like to have a gentleman caller. As a result, the music there will be cunning and scheming in some way. Like Amanda is planning for this.
For the lighting, I think I want to do something nature, but understandable to the audiences. More of a easy lighting requirement because it will be easier and there will be less mistake on the stage. In my first scene, I will utilize two spotlights, one is focusing on Tom, the other is focusing on Amanda. Amanda is calling with someone on the phone, and this light can magnify the relationship in this family. The two lights can enlarge the conflicts and foreshadow the ending scene of Tom leaving the family. Then, when Laura goes to Amanda and tells her that Tom is trying to write. The light can be stage light in which to focus on everyone. However, when they are fighting, I think the light needs to be two different ones, where one is focusing on Tom and Amanda( the arguments), and another is focusing on Laura, afraid of being in the family: she is attempting to save the family situation, but there is no resolution. Yet, when Tom is leaving, the glass menagerie is falling apart. Tom comes back and wants to save the glass animals, yet he couldn’t put it back as the family. As a result, when the glass is broken, the light can be focused on the glass menagerie in order to emphasize the family relationship. In the second scene, the light can be a little difficult as well. Laura wants her brother Tom to apologize to Amanda, so to cooperate with the awkward music, the lighting will be separated as well. Laura and Tom will have the same light, but Amanda has a different spotlight, only focusing on her. Nevertheless, when Tom apologizes, the light can be generated together as one light by giving a strong meaning of getting back. However, they still fight between, so the light can be separated and lighter with white light to emphasize the fighting. Yet, when they talk about Laura, the light can be soft and blends in with yellow light.
