Propless
Being part of the improv was really fun. I still can remember the very first day, we gathered around in the black box. I was so nervous and shy that I am not able to do any action. I don’t know what should I do. However, the group altered me a lot. From thinking” oh is it my term?” to “I will start with this idea”. With the experience of improv, I can speak louder on the stage even with all attention on me. Yet, no fear is not correct. Actually, I am afraid of the audiences. My hands and body are shaking, not knowing what to do next. However, we worked together as one, and we remembered the principal” Yes, and…”. Also, we tried to create a problem and solve it at the end of each performance. Sam is a great director because she cares about us. When we made any mistake along the way, she adjusted us and told us what we should do to solve the problem. For example, I remember the time when me, Ray and Jerry were part of the group. Jerry was the baby, and Ray was the father. I didn’t achieve the principal of “Yes, and…”, so she said maybe I should apply into the situation and agree with the situation by saying yes instead of no. ‘He’ is a girl. Moreover, there was a time when we didn’t create a problem on the Friday night. We had the topic of Not a Box, me, Aaron, and Krystal didn’t create a real problem as we are in the church. As a result, I acknowledge the flaws in this scene, we didn’t create a problem so that it’s not that fun as we played through. I now realize maybe we should have have a problem: maybe my parents weren’t here etc.
For me, personally I like the dating game as everybody does. On Saturday, I was part of the dating game. I, being the basketball player, was especially nervous that I might not look like one on the stage. However, by having the bending down position, I illustrated what will the basketball player be like. Also, when Sam said use three adjectives describe me, I respond with active, energetic and oxygen lover. To be honest, I couldn’t think of another third word because my brain didn’t work at that time. When I said that, everyone looked at me in a weird way, asking me if I mean oxygen. I nodded and answered: yes, in my profession, we must consume a lot of oxygen.” Also, I think Julia is really good at imitating other people. When she has the character of Ray, She actually did a really great job of knowing the personality, and because Ray is always loud on the stage, screaming or shouting to us. He is really active on the stage, so Julia gives us a strong impression of Ray shouting on the stage. Also, saying that his childhood is surrounded by singing raps. Moreover, on Friday, Aaron has the character of super model. He gives us a great picture of those Victoria supermodel on the stage. There is one thing that he will bring to the island is the wings and that’s really funny based on his charming sitting position and voice range on the stage.
Another game I like will be the acting out in 60 seconds, 30 seconds, 15 seconds and 5 seconds. This game is especially funny when me, Julia, and Krystal were part of it. The audience give us the scene of in Stop and Shop. We then were thinking about the event of tornado. As we went to the tornado for having a ‘date’, the tornado came unpredictably, and we had to stay in Stop and Shop to prevent the disastrous weather and accident. It’s funny when we only had 5 seconds because we couldn’t do anything, we couldn’t hide from the table, couldn’t dig a hole on the ground, and we couldn’t drink the water from Stop and Shop. We basically ran to that point and screaming our words out loud.
I had a lot of fun by joining the improv and I think I learned a lot from this. I acknowledged the importance of teamwork and the images of characters that you want to depict. By having the given circumstances, we have to illustrate the characters in a way that the audience can acknowledge what we are trying to do. The improv also helped me to become more engaging in the play, expressing my ideas on the stage.
