My idea

In these two days, we have been thinking about what should our stage be like based on our chosen play. Death of a salesman is my chosen play which is basically talking about the daily life of a salesman. Sometimes, people think of their life as simple and boring, but this story typically represents the desperate and also the dramatics in human lives. In Death of a Salesman, Willy Loman is an aging salesman who's fired from his job. When his son Biff admits that he couldn't get a loan to start his new business, Willy commits suicide so that Biff can use the insurance money to secure his future career. However, during the whole play, Willy has several flashbacks and hallucinations which make the character believable. He thinks he is talking to his brother Ben and his affair in Boston, but those are all hallucinations from his brain. In the beginning, I was thinking about theatre in the round because it can get people to focus on certain characters. Also, the play consists of a small number of people: Willy Loman, Happy, Biff, Linda, Ben, Charley, Bernard, the Women and also the waiter. As a result, I think a small stage might work pretty well with small group of people. Moreover, I want to find some connections between the audiences and the characters, which they can relate well to their lives. Maybe after they saw this production, they can find some similar personality or commons. However, when I ruminate it through in the class and found out maybe I can do this play with Black Box. Here are my reasons, first, because the play is actually in a small group so Black Box can be a great choice to choose. Black Box is not a large space. Also, Black Box can let audiences to pay more attention on the stage( the emotional expressions including, facial expression, body movements). If I choose the proscenium stage, that will too big to show emotions. I really want the audiences to feel the emotions in the actors in order to find some connections in their own lives. On the other hand, I don't want them to stuck on the stage that much because I am eager to let the audiences to think, in a more accurate way, to reflect on their own lives or the society around them. As a result, you actually get some clues of what I am mentioning in this blog. I want to utilize some of the Stanislavski and also some Brecht ideas. Maybe I will come up with more therapists, but I will end here.
The setting of my play will be in the 21 centuries. I kind of change in to fit in our modern society, so people can find more common backgrounds. As a result, the set design will be matched with modern furniture, but it can also be in old-fashioned styles as well because it displays well about the staggering economy or living standards in the family. The color of the family will be greyer into yellower to show the poorness and the desperate. However, there is a time when they begin to have hopes in their minds, so at that time, the color will become yellow. Maybe, when the scene change happened, they can put on yellow furniture.
The light can be in the normal bright light, but maybe in a dimmer light, so the living condition can be easily displayed through a dimmer light. However, when it becomes flashbacks, the light can be greyer so it can illustrate the good old days, but when it returns to the present days, the light gets brighter and dimmer. When he is having the conversation with hallucinations(himself), the light will change into the spotlight in a more yellow color.
