Afterward, she concerns how far does she actually walk, and is she near where Daniel is...etc. Désirée keeps asking people ans vendors about if she is near the black mountains and Daniel Beauxhomme. However, some vendors laugh at her dreams and her imagination, saying black mountain is really far away from here. As a result, she keeps walking to ask. Désirée stops at one of the grillot stand on her way, and then the woman tries to test Désirée if she has patience or not, and when she completes, the woman gives her a lot of food for Désirée to go there. Chapter 9
On the 7 day of travel, Désirée gets to the place that her father had told her about: a place where the forest meets the sea; this place is rather beautiful, calm. On the water, she sees herself as an orphan. However, when she wakes from the sunrise, Désirée meets a peasant girl. She then finds out that the girl has nothing, no parent, no home...etc, so Désirée decides to teach the girl to make wishes to the gods by using the papillions. The first time, the girl fails to capture a butterfly because she doesn’t know what to wish for. As a result, Désirée patiently helps the girl to make a wish afterward. Then, Désirée leads the girl to the way back to the little island where her parents live.
Chapter 10
Désirée finally reaches the city where Daniel and his family lived. This city is new, exciting, and strange. She is curious and excited about what she is facing now. On the window, she sees the splendid colorful clothes and she sees a man and a woman dancing together in holding hands. She then is scared and frightened to think maybe Daniel will be like this. Moreover, this city is so strange that she had never seen before. Before she ever comes here, she thought Tonton Julian was lying about the castle, but as she looks at it, she knows how pretty it is. As she keeps walking, she finds herself in a crowd surrounding the gates to the hotel where Beauxhommes live. She then tells the people in the crowd that she needs to get through the gate. Although they all think it’s strange, they still let her through. Yet, A guard, named Lucifus, calls her a peasant pig, remarking she is not wearing any shoes. Then, all the people are laughing at her.
Désirée then runs to the ocean place and she stays for hours thinking on why the people laughed at her and not wearing shoes. With consideration, she thinks she must get shoes to get through the gate, so she gets down the corosol from the tree to trade for one shoes. However, the man doesnn’t want to trade with her. Nevertheless, she meets a woman who actually likes her story and gives her a dress from her stall. Then, the woman persuades the man to provide Désirée a pair of shoes. At the end, the woman gives her a comb as a gift from her to tangle the knotted hair. Then, she foreshadows Désirée that it might not go well even you have the help from the gods.
